Munchkin cats are known as obligate carnivores; which means that they must eat meat. The digestive tract of the munchkin cat is shortened and becomes optimized by proteins that come from eating meat. Basically, a munchkin cat cannot graze in a pasture and remain healthy. Their dental and digestive apparatus do not have the ability to process plant materials. You might be a bit surprised by this as you sometimes see munchkin cats nibble on plants from time to time. The reason as to why munchkin cats nibble on plants are numerous and just theories. Maybe they just like the taste. No one can really say for sure what the lure is for munchkin cats to nibble on plants.

Thank goodness for pet stores of today. They have plenty of foods to choose from so that we do not have to go and hunt the food for our beloved pets. There are so many good, nutritionally balanced foods available to us to satisfy our munchkin cat, munchkin kittens, our munchkin long hair cats, and any kind of munchkin breed cat that are available today. Of course, only the best quality food is usually what we want as this really does make a difference in the health and appearance of your munchkin cat. Find a food that your munchkin cat will like and stick with that food. Munchkin cats do not need a lot of variety. If you change their food too often, you will soon see a picky eater evolve.

Nutritional requirements for your munchkin cat will vary by the age. If you have a munchkin kitten, then you do not want to feed them food that is for an older grown adult munchkin cat. Be sure to read the directions on the bag of food to avoid over feeding your munchkin cat or munchkin kitten. Most adult munchkin cats need about one cup of food a day, maybe even a little less. Munchkin cats appreciate consistency in their feeding schedules, so try to feed them the same time daily. Keep their food out of high traffic areas of the home and make sure to give the fresh water daily.

Munchkin cats do not have the digestive tract for “people food”. Remember, some of our foods are extremely toxic to them such as chocolate or raw liver. Should you decide to give your munchkin cat cooked meat, be sure to remove all bones before serving them this meat. Poultry and pork bones are easily splintered and can injure your munchkin cat.

If you decide to switch food on your munchkin cat or munchkin kitten, try to do this in a gradual manner. If you do this over the course of a week or longer, it will help their digestive system get used to the change and they will not have upset stomachs. Some of the reasons that you may need to switch your munchkin cat food is the store will stop carrying that particular brand or your munchkin kitten has grown up and now needs to have a healthier food to continue in their healthy growth. Remember to do this change slowly. Your munchkin cat and munchkin kitten will thank you for this.

Giving treats to your munchkin cat is entirely up to you. Some people think it is wrong to give munchkin cats treats; others lavish their munchkin cats in treats. The pet stores have many different varieties of treats. Just be sure to read the directions carefully before serving them to your munchkin cat. You do not want to over indulge your munchkin cat and have them start to gain too much weight. With a little thought and planning, your munchkin cat will have a long and healthy life with you.
